FREEDOM FOR ALAA
2022
Alaa Abd El-Fattah is a British-Egyptian author, software developer and activist who is currently being wrongfully imprisoned in Egypt, initially for allegedly organising a protest without permission, now for sharing a Facebook post. Working on this campaign over the past year and learning more about Alaa’s work has been inspiring and a reminder that, whilst our rights to protest and freedom of expression are being stripped away in the U.K, our fights are always aligned and interconnected. His fight is our fight. I think this is evidenced by the wide reach of prominent figures who have co-signed a letter to Liz Truss in support of Alaa: Angela Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Mark Ruffalo, Olivia Colman, Ruth Gilmore-Wilson, Richard Ratcliffe, Riz Ahmed, Steve McQueen, plus many more. One of the signatories is Khalid Abdalla, who features in the powerful documentary ‘The Square’ on Netflix, which I’d recommend watching if you want to learn more about the political environment in Egypt leading up to Alaa’s imprisonment.
As of 7th July 2022, Alaa is currently 97 days into his hunger strike and the letters his family have been receiving, which are their only indication that Alaa is okay, have now stopped. His situation is desperate and requires a sense of urgency which is yet to be shown. Please follow @freedomforalaa on Instagram for updates and share information to highlight his situation - there is a click-to-tweet link in their bio.
As part of my work with the #FreeAlaa campaign, I made this infomative video that was driven around central London, ahead of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry’s meeting with Liz Truss, before being parked outside the Egyptian embassy.
